When a friend asked me spur of the moment if I wanted to take an impromptu trip to Dayton, Ohio, the first inclination was to say ‘no’. Not ‘why’, but just ‘no’. But, I mean, settled into our lives in our 30s, enshrouded in a thick layer of plans, I thought to myself when was the last time I just went crazy on a Saturday or Sunday without pre-planning and just drove somewhere new? Well, okay, Dayton isn’t new but I had never been to “The Oregon District”.
Two words for you: beer and porn.
Nestled in between each XXX bookshop were some really cute bars, however, it seemed odd to be walking by fluorescent tits on the same street as pubs disguised to be “Olde”. We were all pretty eager to take a seat at the new Toxic Brewing that had opened two months prior.
The tap list was a bit odd; not one but two hot pepper beers, a throwback 3.2% porter (wth), ‘porn’ beer, and a whopping 11+% Belgian Abbey ale. You have my attention… The atmosphere was also odd; one side of the bar was very busy and reminded me of a very ‘short north’-esque bar here in Columbus, and the other side was more like an open auditorium with some scattered low 4-top tables. Maybe I’m getting old but I do appreciate a trendy sort of place making room for people that actually want to hear each other talking to sit down. The bartender was, I think, wearing boyshort underwear and people on both sides of the bar spoke in hushed tones over their beverages trying to catch a glimpse in disbelief. The beer was odd, too. The IPA tasted like it might be missing all of the hops, the 11% beer was a bit too sticky, and the winners for us at the table were the very last three we’d suspect: the two hot pepper beers and the 3.2 porter. Odd experience overall, but I don’t think any brewpub starts out absolutely perfectly right out of the gate. I would love to return in six months or so and see what offerings they are putting out there. Hopefully more than some pale butt cheeks.
OK, so, speaking of winners…I am going to host a giveaway! I had some good fortune this week, and I wanted to pass it on to my readers and Twitter followers. It will go live Monday, September 23 and run for approximately one week. The hint: if you like coffee and prizes you will definitely want to check back on Monday to see what you can win!
